Abstract
This study looks at the role of emojis and abbreviations as contextualization cues in digital communication. It
studies how these linguistic features contribute to meaning-making, emotional expression, and interpretation in
online discourse.
A qualitative discourse analysis method was used to analyze selected digital texts gathered from social media
interactions, messaging applications, and email exchanges. The data were classified based on communication type
and analyzed according to the pragmatic functions of emojis and abbreviations.
The results show that emojis are mainly used in informal communication to express emotions, humor, politeness,
and softening of tone, while their presence in formal communication is limited and selective. Abbreviations,
however, are used in both formal and informal contexts, serving functions of efficiency, urgency, and social identity.
The study further shows that meaning in digital communication is highly context-dependent and influenced by
surrounding linguistic and social cues.
The study concludes that emojis and abbreviations function as important contextualization cues that help
compensate for the absence of nonverbal signals in computer-mediated communication.
